Top 10 College Planning Tips:

  1. Begin gathering information early!
The junior year is an excellent time to begin researching colleges and visiting campuses but even if you are already a senior, just make sure you don't wait until graduation to start!

  2. Take the ACT or SAT test.
Some institutions may require a standardized test for both admission and scholarships. Some institutions have a preferred test but most will accept scores from either.

  3. Find out about admissions requirements and deadlines ahead of time.
You will discover that every college has a slightly different list of admissions requirements so don't be afraid to ask!

  4. Schedule campus visits to your top college choices.
Once you have your list narrowed down to your top five or six choices, visiting a campus in person is the best way to understand the culture and heartbeat of an institution and decide whether or not it is the place for you.

  5. Find out about college or university accreditation.
Accreditation simply means that the university or college is recognized (an educational institution) as maintaining standards that qualify the graduates for admission to higher or more specialized institutions or for professional practice. If an institution is accredited, any credits earned there will be transferable to another college or university that is accredited.

  6. Consider early credit options.
These types of programs provide the opportunity to supplement your high school curriculum as well as get a head start on your first semester of college.

  7. Don't be afraid of the FAFSA!
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is used by the US Department of Education to determine eligibility for Federal Pell Grants and student loans. It is also used by most colleges and universities to determine financial need for institutional scholarships and grants.

  8. Apply for scholarships and grants through sources other than the institution you plan to attend.
In addition to the scholarships available from each individual institution, there are a whole host of independent scholarship programs available, too! The internet is a great way to locate some of these scholarship opportunities.

  9. Don't stress about your major.
Believe it or not, the most popular college major is "Undecided" or "General Studies"! The good news is that college is increasingly becoming more about developing skills for life rather than making a living. While some jobs require very specific training, many of the skills you'll need to be successful can be learned in any major!

  10. Enjoy your college experience!
You will only get out of your college experience what you put into it. Get involved in activities and campus organizations so that you can meet new people and continue to discover more about yourself while you get your education. A college education is truly an investment — so invest wisely! be measured?

For many students and their families, the ultimate decision about the college you'll attend will depend on many factors. That's just as it should be.
